Nicolas Almagro had to dig his heels in against Filippo Volandri on Sunday, but he managed to retain his Brasil Open title with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory. The top seed really made his service game count, and he claimed an impressive 88 percent of the points played on his first serve. It’s a testament to Volandri’s tenacity that he pushed the match into three sets, and made the world No. 11 work for the victory.

Volandri hasn’t won an ATP title in over six years, and this is clearly something that he’s keen to change. Very few players come close to bettering Almagro during the Latin American swing though, so the Italian can take pride in his efforts at the very least. On the day, it just wasn’t to be for the 30 year-old.

Almagro now has 11 titles to his name on the ATP World Tour, all of which have been won on clay courts. We can expect to see him challenge for another trophy next week in Buenos Aires, where he’ll be the defending champion once again.
