Tomic confident of reaching first ATP final

Bernard Tomic is confident of overcoming Andreas Seppi and winning through to the ATP Sydney final.

Tomic wasn't at his best in his quarter-final against Jarkko Nieminen but he showed a mental strength which hasn't always been evident in his matches to hit back from a set down to defeat the defending champion.

Tomic put his slow start down to nerves. "He did play good tennis in the first set and I was a little nervous and wasn't hitting the shots like I was hitting against Florian (Mayer, the fifth seed who Tomic beat in round two) so I'm happy I turned that around in the second set and the third set was really dominant from my side."

"I think playing a night match here was a bit different and obviously playing the defending champion who was really pumped up and playing good was tough. I'd never played him before, never hit with him either so it was different and playing a left-hander's always hard. He showed why he won the tournament last year, he plays really well on these courts."

Tomic missed two set points before losing the opener 8-6 on a tiebreak but after winning five matches in a row to start the year, he never doubted his ability to get the win.

"I had no doubt that I was going to win the match even though I lost the first set," he said. "I felt I was getting chances but just not taking them. I was trying to attack and when I was doing that I was hitting balls long. I started using more topspin and focusing on taking advantage of the short balls I got from him."

"It's really good to win a close match like this and physically I still feel pretty good. I'd like to work on my serve a little bit, I think the percentage was still quite high today but I didn't serve as well as I did against Florian, I had more aces in that match. Jarkko returned really well today so all credit to him."

"I'm really happy with today's performance and there's no question that I'm feeling confident ahead of tomorrow's semi-final. I've got a shot to get into the final for the first time in my career so it's a big match. I'm going to do everything I can to win tomorrow. To get the chance to play my first tour event final and to do it in Australia would be unbelievable but Seppi's a top quality player. Hopefully I can play good tennis and win."
