In 2012, Roger Federer returned to the tournament for the first time since 2005 and proved to us all why he's still one of the very best indoor players on the planet, demolishing an in-form Juan Martin Del Potro in the final to claim the 71st title of his career.

Rotterdam organiser Richard Krajicek will be desperately hoping he can lure Federer back again. Krajicek has done a fantastic job of bringing some of the world's leading players to Rotterdam recently. Andy Murray and Robin Soderling have both won the title in the past few years and Rafael Nadal made the final back in 2009.

The event suits the big servers with the fast, low bouncing surface not really leading to overtly many long rallies. Big serve, flat forehand merchants like Del Potro, Soderling, Tomas Berdych and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga always do well here so expect those guys in the mix again in 2013.

Sadly for the home fans, the wait for another Dutch champion looks destined to go on. Krajicek himself won two titles during his pomp in the mid 1990s and Jan Siemerink was the last Dutch winner back in 1998. These days, most hopes rest on Robin Haase but despite his undoubted talent Haase remains very inconsistent.
